Plum Island
Plum Island is an 11 mile long, narrow barrier island just south of the mouth of the Merrimack River. It protects an area called the Great Marsh, made up of the many estuaries of the Parker, Ipswich and Rowley rivers. The southern portion of the island is home to the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, and the northern portion is residential.
The year-round residents of Plum Island live in Newburyport or Newbury, depending on what part of the island they live on. The towns of Rowley and Ipswich also claim areas of the island, but these areas are not inhabited.
With it’s beautiful beaches, wildlife refuge and historic lighthouse, Plum Island has long been a popular vacation and tourist destination. At the turn of the century there were several large hotels, today visitors can stay at one of a few inns, or rent cottages on the island.
