West Newbury, MA

Settled in 1635
West Newbury is a beautiful rural community with rolling hills, broad valleys, and open fields, dotted with small roadside farmstands. The town includes several protected natural areas, including the Crane Pond Wildlife Management Area, the Mill Pond Recreation Area, and the Riverbend Recreation Area. There are trails for hiking, cross country skiing, and horseback riding throughout the town. The Merrimack River makes the northern border of West Newbury and provides plenty of opportunity for boating and fishing.

The town has seven notable hills including; Pipestave Hill, where one finds an Equestrian and Recreation area, Ilsey Hill and Indian Hill, overlooking the Artichoke Reservoir, Meetinghouse Hill, where the original meeting house once stood, Archelaus Hill, Brake Hill, and Long Hill.

In the past half century West Newbury has grown from a rural farming community into one of the most affluent communities in Massachusetts. There are still several farms operating in the town, the oldest of which is Long Hill Orchard, which is home to a certified organic Community Supported Agriculture program in addition to apple orchards.

West Newbury is located approximately 34 miles north of Boston and 10 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean, in Essex County. It is bordered by the Merrimack River and then both Merrimac  and Amesbury  to the north, Newburyport to the east, Newbury  to the southeast, Groveland  to the southwest, and Haverhill to the east.
